We start in the Spanish Primera Liga where Lionel Messi served us another masterclass to remind us just why he is arguably the greatest footballer ever liveth. Just as Real Madrid secured the club world cup with a Ronaldo hat trick, Lionel Messi was in inspirational form against Espanyol. He scored the 4thgoal in a (4-1) win and was instrumental in 2 other goals scored by Suarez and Alba. The win moved Barca within 3 points of Madrid albeit having played a game more. Atletico Madrid hosted Las Palmas and secured a (1-0) victory thanks to a 59th minute goal from Saul. Sevilla retained 3rd spot with a (4-1) win over Malaga. The 4 goals were scored between the 25th &  35th minute of the game.

In the Italian serie A, Inter Milan moved into 7thplace after (0-1) win at Sassuolo and Fiorentina’s loss at Lazio. Candeva scored the goal in the 47thminute. Juventus retained top place with a (1-0) win over 2nd placed Roma. Gonzalo Higuain scored in the 14th minute of the encounter and moved Juve 7 points clear of Roma. AC Milan hosted Atalanta and could only play out a goalless draw. Napoli hosted and defeated Torino (5-3). Belgian forward Dries Mertens was in devastating mood scoring 4 goals.

We move to the French Ligue 1 where PSG continue to struggle without the enigmatic Zlatan. Guingamp hosted PSG over the weekend with PSG hoping to avoid a 2nd successive league defeat. However, the home side had other plans and even a Cavani strike in the 80th minute was not enough to prevent PSG from going down (2-1). 2nd placed AS Monaco also suffered a league defeat at home to Lyon. The match ended (1-3) with Lacazette scoring the 3rd and final goal. With these results, Nice moved 4 points clear at the top of the serie A table after securing a (2-1) win over Dijon with Italian bad boy Mario Balotelli scoring both goals.

In the German Bundesliga, the 1st match of the weekend saw Dortmund visit Hoffenheim. Dortmund had to come from a goal down on 2 occasions to end the match (2-2). The match was more difficult for Dortmund after Marco Reus was sent off in the 40th minute. This was his 1st red card in 209 Bundesliga appearances. Bayern visited Darmstadt 88 and recorded a (0-1) win over the home side. Douglas costa’s goal in the 70thminute was enough to send Bayern top of the table. Leverkusen continues their wretched form with a (1-2) home loss to Inglostadt.

Finally, in the English premier league, the match of the weekend was at Etihad stadium where Man City played host to Arsenal. After Arsenal’s loss to Everton last week, Wenger would have expected a response. Walcott gave the gunners the early lead but 2 goals from Leroy Sane and Sterling turned the game on its head and the match ended (2-1) to City. For the 2nd time in 5 days, Arsenal lost a lead and eventually lost the game. While Arsenal has failed in the last 2 games, Man United is kicking into gear. 3 wins in the last 3 EPL games have improved the confidence in the united dressing room. Zlatan scored both goals as man united defeated West Brom (0-2) to take his tally to 16 in all competitions and 11 in the EPL. Chelsea continues to roll and secured the 11th successive premier league win. Diego Costa scored the lone goal in the (0-1) win over crystal palace. Chelsea moved 6 points clear at the top of the league with this result. Spurs hosted burnley and had to come from a goal down to win (2-1). Dele Alli and Rose were on hand to score for Spurs.

In the English Premier League, the table positions as at Christmas are mostly significant. With Chelsea top of the league as at Christmas day, 6 points clear at the top. Will Chelsea keep this run and form to clinch the title? With 21 games and 5 months to go, we wait patiently.

We at Investment One wish you a splendid Christmas celebration.
