Weekend Football Review (Season Finale)

The curtain has fallen on the football season in most of Europe’s top leagues. We had surprises, we had shocks, and we had fairy tales. What a season we had!

Barcelona sealed the title on the final day of the season with Luis Suarez scoring a hat trick at Granada. In doing this, he capped up the season with the pichichi. The 1st time another player other than Messi or Ronaldo will win the title since Diego Forlan did same. Madrid fought till the last day but the 0-2 win over Deportivo was not enough. Atletico bounced back from the last defeat to defeat Celta 2-0 to finish in 3rd behind Barcelona and Real Madrid while Villarreal completed the top 4 spots.

What a fairy tale!!!!! Leicester City against all odds crowned champions of England. Chelsea hosted Spurs and about 120 miles away, Leicester fans and players watched on for 90 minutes all tensed up. The celebration seemed to have been put on hold for another weekend after Kane and Son had given Spurs a (2-0) lead at the end of the 1st half but then came Cahill and Hazard to level up (2-2) and hence crown Leicester City champions of England.  Leicester had on Saturday played out a (1-1) draw at Old Trafford. What a season we have had!!! In other matches, Arsenal defeated Norwich City (1-0) at the emirates while Southampton trashed Man City (4-2) thanks a Mane hattrick. Liverpool rested players for upcoming Europa League semi-final 2nd leg and suffered a (3-1) loss to Swansea city. Newcastle United moved into safety with a (1-0) win over crystal palace albeit having played a game more than Sunderland.

What is happening to MSN??? They seem to have run out of steam to carry the team over the finish line. For the 1st time in over a decade specifically February 2003, Barcelona lost 3 La liga games in a row. Barca risk losing it all. The Liga title was basically sewn up some weeks ago but after losing 1-2 to Valencia at the camp nou, the title race has been blown wide open. Atletico moved level on points with Barca with a 3-0 win over Granada while Real Madrid also moved within one point of the top with a 1-5 win over Getafe.

The dream is gradually becoming a reality. Leicester City, a team tipped for relegation at the beginning of the season, sits atop of the Barclays Premier League 7 points clear of 2nd place Spurs. Leicester City will win the Premier league if the team can win 3 of its remaining 5 games. What a season it has been for Jamie Vardy who scored the 2 goals as Leicester defeated Sunderland (0-2). Spurs also won over the weekend with a (3-0) bashing of Man United. Louis Van Gaal will no doubt wonder what else can be done to save his Man United career. Liverpool’s resurgence continued with a (4-1) bashing of Stoke City. Aston Villa’s relegation was basically confirmed over the weekend while Newcastle remains in the danger zone 6 points adrift of safety with 6 games to go. Arsene Wenger will view this as a disappointing season.  With failings from Man United, Chelsea and Man City, this was to be Arsenal’s year but the hope of winning the league was all but dashed after surrendering a 2 goal lead to play out a (3-3) draw with West ham. Chelsea currently 10th position lost (1-0) at Swansea.

Football Review for the week ended March 6, 2016

The football season is finally drawing to the season finale. Most major leagues have less than 10 league games to wrap up the season.

The top 2 teams in the Bundesliga went head to head over the weekend but played out a tactical battle ending in a goalless draw. This seemed a better result for Dortmund when considering the (5-0) trashing received from Bayern earlier in the season. Bayern remain 5 points clear at the top with 9 games to play. PSG failed to win her 2nd league game in a row playing out a 0-0 draw against Montpellier.
