WEEKEND FOOTBALL REVIEW 14/08/17

Approximately 10 weeks after the last match of the 2016/2017 English Premier League season, Leicester  City paid a visit to the Emirates stadium to kick off the 2017 / 2018 English Premier League season.

It was an ideal match to kick off the season: Arsenal needing an 85th minute winner from Giroud to edge a 7 goal thriller. Lacazette drew 1st blood for the gunners but barely 3 minutes later, parity was restored by Okazaki. Vardy scored 2 goals for Leicester either side of a Welbeck goal in 1st half injury time. Leicester city held the lead till 2 quick-fire goals from Arsenal in the 83rd and 85th minute from Ramsey and Giroud gave the gunners a rare opening day victory.

In other matches of the opening weekend, Watford played host to Liverpool at vicarage road. The spoils were evenly shared in this 6 goal thriller. Watford took an early lead but Liverpool struck back and took a (2-3) lead in the 57thminute. The game seemed all done and dusted before an injury time leveller by Britos forced Liverpool to settle for a (3-3) draw. In another pulsating game, Chelsea hosted Burnley and suffered a (2-3) loss at the bridge. Cahill received marching orders as early as the 14th minute and Burnley raced to a (0-3) lead. The introduction of Morata sparked life into Chelsea as the Spanish striker scored 1 and created another but not before Fabregas was also given his marching orders.  Brighton got a tough welcome to the league with a visit to Man City. An Aguero inspired City secured a (0-2) win. Everton hosted Stoke and it turned out to be a memorable 2nd debut for Wayne Rooney as the former Man United captain made a goal scoring return to Goodison which turned out to be the match winning goal. Newcastle made a losing return to the Premier league. The magpies hosted Spurs at St James’park and after Shelvey was given his marching orders, it was an uphill battle against Alli and co. A goal a piece from Alli and Ben Davies gave Spurs a (0-2) victory. Finally Man United hosted West Ham at the theatre of dreams and it was a majestic performance. A brace from Lukaku and 1 apiece from Martial and Pogba gave Man United a (4-0) win.

In the French Ligue 1, Neymar made a goal scoring debut for PSG in the (0-3) romp of Guingamp. Monaco visited Dijon and ran away (1-4) winners with Falcao netting a hattrick in the process.

Barcelona hosted Madrid in the Spanish super cup. Madrid scored 1st via a Pique own goal and then conceded a penalty after Suarez fell theatrically in the Madrid penalty box. Ronaldo was introduced from the bench and he had a dramatic evening by scoring one, getting a red card and shoving the referee before Asensio scored the 3rd goal to end the game (1-3). The 2nd leg will be played at the bernabeu on Wednesday.

League action will resume in the Italian Serie A, Spanish La Liga and German Bundesliga by next weekend.

Have a great week ahead.
